- Preheat the oven to 180 degrees celcius.
- Cream the butter and caster sugar until light and fluffy. Add five eggs, one at a time.
- Add the milk, orange juice, orange zest, lemon zest and vanilla sugar. The mixture may curdle at this stage, but don’t worry because adding the flour will rectify this.
- Sift the baking powder with two cups of the flour and add to the mixture. Keep adding flour, one cup at a time to form a soft, pliable dough. Let it rest while you tidy up.
- Shape pieces of dough into little logs and then twist them. You can also plait them.
- Beat the remaining egg with 1 tablespoon of milk and use to glaze the logs. Sprinkle with sesame seeds (if using).
- Bake for about 20 minutes then allow to cool.
